Project Information
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Vogue, and Rockefeller Center joined forces with America250 to present United Flags of Fashion — a sweeping tribute to American creativity, identity, and design.
The project brings together 120+ of the most talented designers working today: from icons of American fashion including Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, and Vera Wang, to the rising stars of a new generation like Willy Chavarria, Emily Bode, and Christopher John Rogers. Each was asked to redesign a state flag through their own creative lens.
Freedom was a key part of the brief for the designers, but it created a challenge for us: building a system that could accommodate and elevate a wide range of visual styles. Our solution was simple: design for unity. A navy blue anchors the identity in something unmistakably American without the charge of red-white-and-blue patriotism.
The flag that we created for the project gives United Flags of Fashion a clear presence within the installation itself. The UFF flag now flies at Rockefeller Center alongside the designers' work, and has become the hero image of the project. Fifty stars, one for every state, ring the edge, a direct nod to the original Stars and Stripes.
We designed every touchpoint of the experience, both physical and digital: from environmental signage and printed maps to photography and film production. A large map, prominently displayed at Rockefeller Center and accessible digitally via QR code, helps visitors find specific designers' flags.
We also built a custom microsite centered around discovery: an immersive white canvas where the flags take center stage. The interface is intentionally neutral, clean, and intuitive, with generous white space around each flag to keep the designs from becoming overwhelming or competing with one another. Visitors can explore the collection however they like, browsing the full grid, sorting by state, or searching an index.
The installation will be on view at the Rockefeller Center Rink from July 27 through September 4, 2026. After closing, the flags will be donated to SCAD Museum of Art for preservation and future public exhibition.
